Welcome back . . . to my internet show,

technology and health care, American Well.

Recently, I had the opportunity and pleasure to chat with the President and CEO of American Well Systems,

I came away impressed
not only with his vision for
American Well,
but also his thoughts on health care reform, technology,
and the future direction of the health care industry.

I hope to have him back with us again soon.

Enjoy!

Are you familiar with the All-Payer System?

Definition:  A system in which prices for health services and payment methods are the same, regardless of who is paying. For instance, in an all-payer system, federal or state government, a private insurer, a self-insured employer plan, an individual, or any other payer could pay the same rates. What are All Patient Diagnosis Related Groups (APDRG)?

Definition:  An enhancement of the original DRGs, designed to apply to a population broader than that of Medicare beneficiaries, who are predominately older individuals. The APDRG set includes groupings for pediatric and maternity cases as well as of services for HIV-related conditions and other special cases.

What is Behavioral Health (Healthcare)?

Definition:  An umbrella term that includes mental health, psychiatric, marriage and family counseling, addictions treatment and substance abuse. Services are provided by a myriad of providers, including social workers, counselors, psychiatrist, psychologists, neurologists and even family practice physicians.

Many states have "parity" laws that attempt to require that behavioral health insurance coverage be provided "on par" to physical health coverage.

PresidentObama_HealthIT_March 2009.jpg

Everyone in Health Care is excited about the funding in President Obama's economic stimulus bill for improving health care information technology.

The possibilities have created expectations.

On the other hand, the layers of bureaucracy in our government have from time to time slowed or shut things down.

There is real concern that the government will be unable to get it right.
